UN envoy questions military’s decision to hold elections while detaining national leaders

  • by

How can there be full participation in the military-led elections when important leaders are being held and more than 22,000 political prisoners are being held, UN Special Representative for Myanmar Julie Bishop asked at an informal discussion of the UN General Assembly on June 9.

She therefore called for the release of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint.

Ms. Julie added in her presentation on Myanmar that she wanted to question the strategy of the Burmese military, which has been in power for more than four years.

She also pointed out that Myanmar is facing a state of national disintegration that has never been seen before.

Ms. Julie warned that if all sides continue with a belligerent approach and fail to stop the violence, it could be a self-destructive situation.

She added that the country is working closely with ASEAN to prevent the Myanmar conflict from escalating into a regional crisis.

Chinese representative Ms. Sen Lai said that the international community should resolve the Myanmar issue by integrating differences rather than escalating tensions.

The Chinese representative also called on UN Special Representative for Myanmar Ms. Julie Bishop to play a positive role in the political settlement of the Myanmar issue.

Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Htun also attended the meeting.
